Producer/DJ House Shoes befriended Jay Dee when both were young record-chasing beat fiends in a mid-'90s Detroit hip-hop scene that most famously birthed Marshall "Eminem" Mathers.

As the resident spinner at the D's St. Andrew's Hall famed friday night "Three Floors of Fun" hip hop parties, Shoes championed Dilla's productions as though they were his own. Such was the kinship he felt for Jay's music. So it's most fitting that Shoes now memorializes James Yancey's genius via mixtape.

"House Shoes Presents The King James Version" (House Shoes) is a lovingly and expertly constructed journey through the building blocks of Dilla's beats - the dusty OG vinyl grooves that he sampled.

From the basis of a Frank-N-Dank cult favorite, through that of a Fantastic SV moment, to Donuts' irresistible ingredients, Shoes' thorough work shines the light on his friend's ear for a sneaky loop, his affection for perfectly imperfect chops and his knack for extracting the soul from a forgotten musical fragment and making it something altogether new, something his own.

Long Live King James......
